Ecards, celebrations, words of congratulations. These concepts are usually directed toward older people. Your sister in law has a baby and you send a cute note letting her know how happy you are for the tiny toes that have become part of your family. Your nephew graduates from college with a double major and you email him a card to share how proud you are of him. Someone retires. A friend goes on a long-deserved vacation.

These are all grown-up situations to commemorate.

But what about the shorter people in your life – the ones who might be a decade short of legal maturity?

Kids love to get spontaneous cards, presents and mail. It makes them feel extra special and like they’re, well, older and important. And they especially love to be entertained in a way that’s just for themselves.

There are ecards for that. Like:

1. A simple, personalized ecard to say, Hey, I’m thinking about you. This ecard allows you to import your own photo – maybe one of the two of you – that can make it seem as though it’s made just for them.

2. This tribute to an older daughter is sentimental and sweet, encouraging her to keep marching to the beat of her own drum.

3. Back-to-school can bring with it a host of nerves and excitement. This ecard pumps up his or her confidence and gets a little silly, too.

4. Who doesn’t like happy faces? This ecard sends a smile their way – perfect for days when they might be feeling a little down in the dumps.

5. Missing a little one? Let them know that you’re thinking of them, and wishing you were there with this ecard.

6. Bear hugs are the best kind. Especially when they’re send to a kiddo whose in need of one. This bear ecard will send lots of virtual squishing love their way.

7. When you’re thinking of a little one, why not let them know with this simple, smily ecard?

8. What’s better than an ecard to send a hug? An ecard to send lots of hugs. This virtual hug-fest ecard will get the job done!

Obviously, an ecard isn’t the only way to show a child that you care, but we often get wrapped up in daily life and forget to take a few little steps to do so. We’re busy and we forget that kids aren’t always aware that we’re loving them, even when from a distance. Here’s some ways that you can make a little one feel special:

1. Paint, draw or color them a picture. Better: create an artistic masterpiece with them.

2. Send love notes in their lunch box.

3. Buy them a spontaneous present. It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive – it can be as simple as a book or key chain – just something that shows you’re thinking of their happiness.

4. Get baking or cooking. Kids love to help bake or cook, and from my experience, getting messy in the kitchen generally leads to less meal-time battles and a supreme level of glee.

5. Write them a list of everything you love about them and post it somewhere important. You can even frame it and hang it on their bedroom wall.

6. Get crafty. Make your special kiddo something with your own two hands, or even better, make something together.

7. Cast off the usual dinner format, to make a funny-face plate. This doesn’t mean healthy foods need to go by the way-side, just that you get creative while arranging the healthy foods.

8. Buy a new game and have it set up to play when they come home. A game might cost you $20 and an hour of your day, but for them, walking in the door to some special one-on-one time is priceless.

Everywhere you look, there are messages of retirement planning.

You see them when you try to get a little responsible, reading advice from by financial planners, who suggest putting a percentage of your income into a 401K. You see print and television ads containing images of retirement condos. And of course, there’s Florida’s reputation of retirement bliss.

Retiring early, late, not at all…it’s a looming date, it seems, putting pressure on us to save, plan, and day dream of the days when the 9 to 5 grind isn’t part of our life. What are your plans?

With this 9 to 5 grind comes the every-once-in-a-while retirement party. Say Abe in marketing is cutting off his ties to the work-world, leaving in two weeks to spend his golden years in the company of a set of golf clubs and his wife’s lemonade – this might be a bittersweet image, since Abe really got the job done well, but he’s happy with his life and the upcoming new phase. You should be happy for him, too.

Maybe your mother or father has finally saved up enough pennies for a rainy day and now has plans to spend his or her days with friends, indulging in hobbies and not having to return to the office ever again. You should definitely look forward to this for mom or dad. After all, they’ve worked so hard, for so long.

In fact, you should congratulate anyone who is leaving the confines of employment for sunny, relaxed days. Envy them, too, sure, but be truly celebratory that they had the ability and foresight to plan ahead for these upcoming days. Not everyone will get the chance to retire, after all – money’s always tight and it can be hard to walk away from a guaranteed paycheck, choosing to live from a savings account.

In amongst the various congratulations ecards available out there, I found the following eight, perfect for sending to those retiring from the work world.

Funny and completely true, this ecard mocks us employed folk while also sending a simple message of congratulations.

If you belong to the sentimental camp, or the retiree does, this ecard might be perfect because of its sweet message. This ecard would suit family, close friends and mentors with whom you have a personal relationship.

If you’re truly happy for a retiree, especially a dog-loving retiree, this ecard featuring a sleeping puppy will get the job done well.

Uplifting and inspiring, this retirement ecard celebrates the possibilities your retiree is going to have available with a beautiful landscaped photograph as the background.

For the sassy retiring lady in your life, a cabana boy or beach vacation might be just the retirement gift she needs (and craves). Since you’re still one of those employed folks, sometimes struggling to make ends meet, don’t feel as though you have to fund the trip – just put the idea in her head with this ecard.

Create a beautiful, personalized ecard with this retirement ecard.

Know someone planning an RV trip to kick off their retirement? You couldn’t find an ecard more perfect for them than this one.

A little more sentimental than the others, this ecard celebrates the accomplishments your favorite retiree has created, and looks forward to his or her future happy, peaceful days.

Only two days remain until you’re planning to celebrate Independence Day, July 4th. People look forward to this date all year round, not only because they get the day off of work, but because it’s usually a day packed with fun in the sun, family, good friends, delicious food and tons of fun.

Are your plans set in stone? I’ve known all kinds of celebrators – those who plan their legendary annual party months in advance, some who find something to do the day of, and even those who avoid the crowds to go on a camping trip. What’s your Independence Day style? I’m definitely more of a party attendee than organizer because I’d prefer to leave the stress of food and drink prep, clean up and hostessing to someone else.

Just give me a lounger, a cool beverage and sunshine!

I have a few suggestions for you, dear celebrator:

If you’re hosting a barbecue, make sure that everyone on the invite list is okay with the menu, and that you’ve made arrangements to feed those with special diet concerns. Speaking from experience, showing up for a barbecue and finding there’s no food options for a vegetarian, diabetic or gluten-free diet sucks. You get to sit and watch everyone else enjoy their meals, wondering what time is too early to cut out and grab your own dinner. Make sure vegetarians are provided with veggie options like veggie dogs and burgers; there’s lots of fresh fruit and veggies for those who are avoiding wheat and dairy, and that there are some low-fat or cholesterol options, as well.

Send out this ecard to potential attendees to make them daydream, incite a Pavlovian response and gets lots of yes! RSVPs. Go the extra mile by reminding the guest list to bring their sunglasses, hats and sun block, to protect them from damaging UV rays while they’re basking in the holiday sunshine.

If you’re planning on setting off some fireworks, make sure you’re aware of any laws or restrictions in your neighborhood. You don’t want to have a large group gathered, only to receive a citation or have your sparkly supplies taken away by law enforcement! Also, ensure that you’re aware of any safety concerns by practising fire safety, setting off fireworks in an open area and obviously, by not allowing children to play with fireworks unattended.

Daylight can be a cramp in firework plans. Schedule the set-off of fireworks to begin at the earliest time after darkness, so that it’s not an annoyance to neighbors that might be trying to get some post-celebration shut-eye. This cute ecard will give your friends and family a preview of the show to come; this sparkly ecard is infused with national pride.

If you’re an attendee, not an organizer, you can still send ecards to say Happy Indepenance Day! to your favorite people. By simply search online, you can pull up a variety of celebratory cards, to be delivered directly to a special person’s email inbox – or you can check out these fourth of July ecards by American Greetings.

Now quick, where’s my frosty beverage and lounger?

Sometimes, there’s no real occasion to send an ecard. Sometimes, you might feel the need to simply say, “hey, I’m thinking of you” in an inexpensive, instantaneous way – such as when your husband is spending his first day at home with the kids after you’ve returned to work full-time, after a long weekend away from friends, a few days after your last dinner date, when your favorite work friend’s moved on and the office just isn’t the same without her. Maybe there’s no reason at all, but you just want someone special to know that you’re thinking of them.

Traditionally, blank note cards or greeting cards have filled this role. But unless you march out, buy a card, address and personalize it, mail it and have instant delivering, it will take a little while for the recipient to be aware of your thoughts of them.

The new way to send a message, complete with cute images, personalized messages and direct-to-their-eyes delivery is an ecard. Only with an ecard can you spend five minutes creating a free message of endearment and have them receive it, too.

I like the talking ecards a lot. There’s a choice of voices, the messenger is usually super cute, and I can be downright silly or sentimental without feeling cheesy. Here’s seven talking ecards you can send, just because:

1. Here kitty kitty
This ecard features a grey-scale kitty cat with animated features, just waiting to speak your mind.

2. Over-caffeinated kitty
This huge-eyed feline should really cut back on the coffee. When you send this Twisted Whiskers ecard to say Hi, you never know the giggles that you might unleash.

3. Import a photo
Depending on which photo you add to this talking ecard, the tone of the ecard can change. Putting a stern-faced image, accompanied by a silly message, or a silly photo with a snippet of serious poetry can make even the most stoic-faced receiver break into a smile. The options are truly limitless with this ecard.

4. Make headlines
Imagine being a happy story on the evening news – doesn’t happen very often, does it? Well, you can make sure that someone is when you send this talking ecard, which features a new anchor reporting the most important information of the day – whatever you choose her to say.

5. The cutest kitten ever
Well, I have a particular weakness for fluffy, wide-eyed kittens. As do a long of women (hint, hint). Few things can incite an awwww quicker than this ecard speaking directly to you.

6. Man’s best friend
This Twisted Whiskers doggy ecard has obviously had a long night, probably kept up by some pesky cat and now, he’s tried to compensate for the tiredness with too much coffee and sugar. He looks wired, and perfect to send a bouncy message with.

7. Bedtime goodbyes
There a cute bear, a gigantic moon and a starry night as the background for this talking ecard, making it the perfect way to say good night to a special lady after a late-evening conversation or date.

Sometimes, there’s something to be said for brevity. A simple text message, ‘I can’t wait to ____________‘ can make someone’s day, depending on if you send it to the number. There’s all kinds of reasons to tell your sweetie that you’re facing some cravings – an anniversary, a celebration, Thursday – and there’s multiple ways to go about sharing the mood.

Anyone whose been caught on the phone extolling the virtues of a certain position, only to find out that they were on speaker phone the whole time and their lover’s boss was listening in knows that discreetness is needed. People who’ve been the recipient of a rather graphic text while indisposed, therefore having asked their mother to check when the phone bleeped? Know all too well about a time and a place.

There’s also a method.

After all, you never know whose going to see the text message while it’s reviewed, who’ll pick up the phone, who is looking up at your skywriting.

Sending naughty messages within ecards is relatively safe – after all, the only people who can see it are those with a password to the email account. And they can check out your bad-ass words of loving whenever they have an alone moment to do so. So, let’s get started.

1. Valentine’s Day could use something a little more risqué, like this ecard. It’s personable, fairly PG-13 and incites winks and smiles. Great for a casual relationship, like maybe one that’s just getting started.

2. Blunt and lacking details, this Valentine’s Day ecard will bring about day dreaming. For a flirty duo, you couldn’t ask for something more open-minded or ended.

3. Yes, even Christmas can be made a little mature. Simple and playful, this ecard omits that three-letter-word that so many risqué ecard might bluntly bring up, simply going back to our childhood dirty mouth scenarios.

4. Since the creation and wide-spread water-cooler talk of the magical blue pills has come about, Viagra jokes have become commonplace. This Halloween ecard instills a chortle while poking fun at a centuries old mummy.

5. Remember mad libs? Ever play dirty mad libs? This ecard gives you the chance to mad lib your honey into their imagination. And really, aren’t our imaginations one of the places to congregate?

6. You’ve just had another successful dinner date, complete with dessert. That’s where this ecard comes in. Retro and cute, clearing off the table has never sounded so fun.

7. This Valentine’s Day ecard couldn’t be more amourous. Picturesque and frought with potential, your valentine will definitely get a rise out of this one.

8. This bear has a bit of a nasty side. And kind of a dirty mouth. That doesn’t mean that this cute Valentine’s Day ecard isn’t the perfect thing to send to your lover with a great sense of humor.

9. This one can be as clean or dirty as the recipient takes it. Anytime you start to assert the five senses’ role in your relaitonship, you can be talking in double entendres. This Valentine’s Day ecard is all about a lunch date, apparently!

10. Get right to the point with this ecard, ladies. In the least, your lover’s eyebrows will raise and the best case scenario might involve a lunchtime quickie.

11. Inflate your lover’s sense of bravado with this complimentary adult ecard.

12. It’s not just about sex with this loving ecard. But it’s definitely a major theme.

13. Want to be blunt about the mood you’re in, without having to say a word? This ecard does it for you, so that they know you want them to.

So, your best friend (boyfriend, college roommate, father, mother, etc.) is going on a trip. While you have the ability to contain the envious storm that brews within you, you’re happy that they get to leave the confines of their day-to-day doll-drum life for new, adventurous pastures.

Of course, they could take you with them – what kind of a friend (boyfriend, college roommate, father, mother, etc.) are they? But we’ll table that feeling for now, and celebrate their upcoming vacation.

Before you break into a jazz rendition of ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane,’ consider all of the things your friend has to iron out – details regarding visas and passports, vaccines and travel insurance. And there’s packing and house-sitting to arrange, too! The point is, they’re super busy with last-minute details and though they might appreciate your serenade, they likely have little time for it or the attention span to enjoy it.

Much like back when you were in high school, all they’re mentally capable of is ‘I’m leaving in X days!’

Whether you have time for a last-minute get-together, a round of drinks to warn them against drinking the water, or a gossip session while bathing suits (yes, you’re totally allowed to temporarily hate them for looking that good in that bikini), send them an ecard the day before they leave. It will send them out of town with the wishes for a fun, safe time and the knowledge that there’s someone back home, waiting for them.

If a cruise is in their future, this ecard can put them already on the boat. As we all learned by the age of three, visuals are integral to day dreaming success.

Maybe they’re the hardest working person you know, able to balance countless tasks at work, take care of the home and family, bake a dozen cookies and look good doing it. They’re about due for some time off, wouldn’t you say? You should tell them that, with this ecard.

As if they need a reminder about how many days left until they are out of here, this ecard provides one. More favorable to use poor saps stuck behind the desk while they’re off, gallivanting all over the world, is the reminder to get their work tied up – so we don’t have to do it for them!

For the minx you know and love, whose leaving to spread her trouble all over hell’s half acre, I suggest this sassy ecard.

For a completely personalized message, without the pre-designed text or poetry, send this ecard to your friend. You can add in a photo or video, making it completely reflective of your relationship. Or even include photos of  a vacation you two might have taken together in the past!

Okay, so maybe your friend (boyfriend, college roommate, father, mother, etc.) is like gold and you are going on vacation, too. That doesn’t mean that this ecard doesn’t have a place. Putting your mind on a beach, in two comfortable chairs, admiring the shore (and the drink servers) will add to the We’re going on vacation! excitement.

As much as everyone loves to hear the magical Happy Birthday song crooned by a large group in their honor, sometimes Aunt Myrtle just doesn’t hit the high notes and it ends up being more torturous than not.

Okay, so when I said Autn Myrtle, I meant you.

There’s a reason nobody wants to go to karaoke with you – you are not the next American Idol.

If you send a birthday song someone’s way, consider a singing ecard instead of a phone call wherein you serenade them. If you let the ecard do the harmonizing and keep your voice sealed deep within yourself, it might be like a card and a present for the recipient.

If you combine animals and singing, it’s pretty much win-win. Most people will laugh, others (often of the female variety) will awwwwww, while still others might shut the door to their office, close the blinds and start a one-person mosh pit in their own honor while feisty felines rock out on their cartoon guitars.

Okay. Maybe that’s just me. Good thing I don’t have an office – that’d be an embarassing moment for my boss to walk in on.

Cutting to the chase: you can’t sing, animals are cute, you have a birthday ecard to send and these animals do sing. Go to it.

  1. What’s better than a chicken singing happy birthday? A chicken singing a birthday aria. This operatic hen can hit high notes, avian style.
  2. A creepy kitty holds what I can only hope is a fishy cake with a flaming candle in it, not an actual fish, as he meows his way through the birthday song in this ecard.
  3. Who knew the barn was so full of talent? The three chickens, not to be confused with the three tenors, sing of merriment and frolicking in this short pen-venued concert in an ecard. Cute, very cute.
  4. A group of yellow labs look cuddily cute, clad in birthday hats as the group of them bark the birthday song and blow noise makers in this adorable birthday ecard.
  5. Who said disco was dead? Send this customizable animal ensemble to the birthday celebrator to insert a little hustle into their day. You can select which animals will be part of the disco-doing crew.
  6. Insert a little jazz (and a little roast) with this customizable doggone funny lounge card. You can add your own dog’s photo in, or select from one of the five choices.
  7. You may be a little bit rock and roll, but they might be a little country. Which makes this customizable country-themed happy birthday ecard ideal, especially after you customize the animal band members. The banjo just might make you tap your toes, too.
  8. Okay, so maybe you’re a little bit country and they’re a little bit rock and roll. A progressive animal band, which you can hand-pick, will rock out to the Happy Birthday Song in this ecard. They may not be the Sex Pistols, but these Brit rockers (in feline, canine or hamster variety) can rock out and garner a chuckle.

You grew up, spend 12 years navigating grades one through twelve and then you went to college. Or maybe you skipped out on a post-secondary education, sliding into a career right away. Odds are, regardless of what path you chose to become the grown up child of you father’s and you’re not living in the same house. Maybe even an entire country separates the two of you.

You’ve got to plan ahead when Father’s Day, his birthday and the winter holidays roll around, packing cards and presents for shipping so that they’ll reach him on or before the actual date they’re meant to celebrate. Life gets in the way, mail gets lost, shipping can be expensive and every person seems to be struggling financially. Ecards can save this Father’s Day.

Or.

You’re husband or partner is working away from home. He’s gone on the road to help support your family and though you’d like nothing more than to be with him to celebrate Father’s Day on June 21st, it’s just not possible. You want this special dad to know exactly how loved, missed and important he is. Ecards can do that, too.

Whether you’re looking for a heartfelt eCard, something funny, or something for your grandfather (or son), American Greetings has eCards for every man who is owed a Happy Father’s Day. In fact, they’ve just created more ecards for the occasion, bringing their selection up to a whopping 88 ecards from you to choose from to say Hey, Happy Father’s Day, big guy.

Introducing the new Father’s Day eCards, available from American Greetings:

  1. This musical eCard by Chicken Soup for the Soul is available to premium members, and provides a short blessing in amoungst male-centred imagery and colors. Simple and heartfelt, this eCard doesn’t hurt your teeth with sugary sweet sentiment.
  2. This toasty eCard for premium member takes the word pun to a whole new level. Silly and full of I love yous, you can customize this Father’s Day eCard by adding your own photo.
  3. This premium interactive eCard got me a little misty-eyed. I bet it will do the same for the dad you send it to.
  4. This mini-putt game frustrated me – but I need to work on my trajectory, and I’m not any one’s father. The dad you’re sending this eCard to will probably appreciate the opportunity to monkey around on the virtual course.
  5. This sentimental eCard for premium members will have any father by the heartstrings. It comes with a short, meaningful and personal message, or you can customize it with your own sentiments. Think you can bring a tear to his eye?
  6. The peppy, fun song in this eCard might make the dad you’re sending it to smile hugely. I know I did. And you can never go wrong with Beethoven, can you?
  7. This Father’s Day Trading Card is cute and personalizable for the fun dad in your life. Add a photo, his ’stats’ and a quirky fact and you’ve got a different kind of Father’s Day eCard.
  8. This final new Father’s Day eCard is perfect for a former Daddy’s Little Girl to send to her daddy. I can’t say much more about it than that – you’ll have to look for yourself.

Last night, I was one of the lucky Vancouverites invited to the formal announcement party for a new social media-based search engine, Wantsa. Simply explained, they gathered approximately 80 people onto a gorgeous yacht for a three-hour tour of Vancouver’s coast with delicious appetizers, plenty of fine drinks and conversation and a breathtaking view.

I’m extremely appreciative that I got to be at this initial announcement, to hear the heads of the company speak passionately about the Wantsa engine and its future role in philanthropy.

Yes, this modern-day referral engine will be helping various causes, every time a user takes advantage of a recommended business or service’s offers. Seems like one of the best platforms I’ve heard of in a long time because we’re all interested in making change, but currently, so many of us are not in the financial position to contribute to charities.

Being as this was a social media-based event, it seems fitting to send the hosts and party organizer an ecard to thank them for the event. Like one of these seven:

1. An emoticon-infused thanks is an entirely appropriate method for saying thank you to dot-comrades. This ecard is simple, with a stylish font and smiley.

2. Simple and tasteful, this ecard with beautiful typography will send a quick note, without any flowery sentiment.

3. This bohemian-styled thank you ecard features calm, neutral colors, a large (but not overwhelming) flower and a modern message. It adds a feminine touch, without taking away any professional tone.

4. A little more playful, but having met the powers that be, still appropriate, this ecard pops with color and shares a semi-personal thank you. This card wouldn’t be right for a stiff-affair; since Wantsa definitely knew how to throw a fun party, I’d be in the clear!

5. This thank you ecard is full of warm colours and a casual, simple message. I wouldn’t send it in this situation, but if the event had been more of an intimate function at a candle-lit bistro, this ecard would be perfect.

6. How much more work-savvy can you get than this ecard titled “Business Appropriate”? The attractive blue theme is not distracting and the repeated ‘Thank You’ in different fonts and colours makes it a touch whimsical, without losing credibility.

7. This final thank you ecard is modern and stylish, with bright colors and a simple design. Perfect for the bigwigs who seek a touch of funkiness. While most might choose to send a white-based color-scheme, I like this dark background with high contrasting colors because it’s unique.

Manners say that whenever someone, be it a friend, family member or business associate, hosts a party that you’ve attending, you should thank them for their efforts. This can seem less important when it’s an event that revolves around the Internet, but not so!

Don’t let a dot-com think that you’ve forgotten all about the rules that your mother taught you – thank the site’s staff for a great party, good conversation and most of all, wish them good luck on their ventures!

As we get into the thick of the summer, my calendar gets more and more full each day. Being a mom has several perks and in the summer time especially, social events for me and my daughter abound! Especially since there are so many of her friends’ birthday parties, with the perfect weather to host them out of doors.

Of course, birthday parties mean three things: birthday cake, toys and cards. Kids and birthday cards have a weird relationship.

On one hand, there’s little that a kiddo loves more than to proudly display all of the cards he or she has received, getting to show everyone who comes around just how big a deal their birthday is. But, often cards end up creased, damaged, lost or simply in the trash can after the birthday glow has faded.

Ecards can solve this un-green practise, while still allowing the birthday girl or boy to beam and feel special. Odds are that they’ll be bugging mom or dad to reload their birthday ecard over and over, as they giggle and show anyone who’s willing to look at the computer screen. If you can add in a favorite television character, depending on their age, they might be on cloud nine.

Spongebob Squarepants is wildly loved by the preschooler to primary aged kids. This ecard lets birthday kids can help Spongebob toss swimmers into the Goo Lagoon, to practice his lifeguarding skills. Or for something less interactive, Spongebob can serenade kiddos with this ecard’s rock and roll birthday song, or do the birthday song a little differently in this ecard.

The Care Bears are as popular as ever. Which is why this wish-come-true ecard will make any fan smile. If you need a little more sentiment, a minty-green Care Bear says it all on this ecard. Or, let them play a game. The birthday boy or girl can turn Grumpy Bear’s frown upside-down as they turn raindrops into hearts in this interactive ecard, or unveil Funshine Bear’s birthday message in this ecard.

Polly Pocket has become little girl favorite, which is why any one of this ecard, this ecard, or this ecard will make the birthday princess happy. Of course, there’s also this interactive ecard, which allows little girls to uncover a birthday surprise.

There’s more!

For a Hello Kitty birthday wish, this ecard is paramount. The Transformers birthday ecard will make some rough and tumble little guy smile. And Strawberry Shortcake is just waiting to wish the little birthday girl happy wishes with this ecard.

The Rugrats-themed interactive birthday ecard will allow little would-be environmental heroes rescue virtual animals from poachers. Blue’s Clues offers kiddos the chance to capture balloons in this interactive, color-matching birthday ecard. Between a birthday boy or girl and Jimmy Neutron, the Earth (and his or her birthday) must be saved from an asteroid in this birthday ecard’s game.

Now that you’ve picked out the ecard, whatever will you buy the little one? Here’s a little tip: the younger they are, the quieter toys should be. Trust me, mom and dad will thank you.
